SAME LOVE – MACKLEMORE (music video)

SAME LOVE lyrics

After hearing about the Orlando shootings this past weekend at the nightclub, this song instantly popped into my head. There is so much hate, and discrimination in our world today, and this song hits these social issues head on. My heart is heavy for those who have innocently lost their lives due to hate crimes, and my hope is that this song can open the eyes of the world, love is love and why thats so hard to accept, I’ll never know.

This songs main theme is stereotypes, how even as children we are plagued with them, being homosexual is one of them. The singer of the song thought he was gay as a child because he could draw, and kept his room clean. Why would a child be scared to be gay? It’s because nowadays they are hated on for their sexual preference. This song talks about how religion tells them that they can be cured from being gay, it’s still not socially acceptable, yet the statement “god loves all his children” is forgotten. This speaks to me, my best guy friend got shunned from his family, and his church for being gay. America says we accept everyone, yet when they have different beliefs than ours we get defensive, and claim their “truth” is wrong because it doesn’t match ours. Who are we to decide what’s right and whats wrong?

Words like “gay” and “faggot” get dropped without people even realizing what they are saying, in day to day conversation, or in a song. This song is bringing attention to that. The line “man thats gay, gets dropped the daily” It’s true, we say derogatory words without even thinking twice. This song keeps coming back to hate, and how prominent it is today. He’s right, people cannot change who they are and nor should they want to. That’s so important which is why i believe he used “and I can’t change, even if I tried, even if I wanted to” in the chorus. Like he says we can’t change who they are, even if they break the “norm”, I want to live in a world where my children won’t think being gay is different, they just love who they love.

The line that hit me the hardest in this song was “a world so hateful some would rather die than be who they are.” We live in a world where people take their own lives because they hate themselves. I couldn’t imagine hating myself so much, and having nowhere to turn because you are “different” than what society says is correct. We need to welcome others differences with open arms, and that’s the whole point of this song.

The writer of this song did an AMAZING job speaking up about the social issue of homophobia in this country, and the rest of the world. My hope is that this song can open the eyes of those who’s hearts are filled with hatred for those who are different than they are. My heart breaks for those who feel that they are alone, and hated. If you are one of those people, listen to this song and know that there are others out there who are like you, and those of us who aren’t but support you one hundred percent. In light of the shootings against the gay community this past weekend, my heart goes out to you. I wish I could wrap my arms around you, and let you know that you aren’t alone. For those whose lives were innocently taken due to the hatred, may you rest in peace.

How to save a life, or how to try

The Fray’s song “How to save a life” was on the Billboard hot 100 songs for 58 consecutive weeks, and for a very good reason, it’s relatable, which I wish it wasn’t. When I first heard this song I thought it was about a man who was in conflict with one of his best friends, which wasn’t entirely inaccurate, but there is so much more to be said about this song. This is a post containing some talk about suicide, just a forewarning to any of my readers who may be sensitive to the subject. That being said, let’s get to it.

THE FRAY – How to save a life lyrics

THE FRAY – How to save a life music video

The opening of the song makes me believe that this is based off of a real personal experience, due to the the placement of the quotation marks. It’s written as,

Step one, you say “We need to talk” he walks, you say “Sit down, it’s just a talk”

Since the writer is using quotation marks in his lyrics, I assume that this song is based on an actual conversation he has had with someone. He talks about how he sees through his friends fake smile, and depression. He is there trying to help his friend deal with whatever it is thats weighing him down, but his friend keeps placing the blame on himself. Either his friend isn’t open to his help, or he isn’t willing to listen and take advice. Reaching out to someone with depression is the first step in trying to get them to realize that they aren’t alone, the man cares about his friend. He asks himself why he came to help, because he doesn’t feel that it’s working, or that he’s getting through to his friend.

The verses of the song I believe are explaining to the listener how to help someone who is on the brink of suicide, yet the chorus is him speaking in first person, which is why I believe this is a true story. The chorus is ” Where did i go wrong? I lost a friend, somewhere along in the bitterness, and I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known how to save a life” It now becomes clear to me that the writer is placing the blame on himself for not being able to help. He thinks that if he would have done more, his friend would still be alive. That is a hard line to swallow, I can feel his guilt. He couldn’t have known how to keep his friend from committing suicide, yet he still feels guilty for not staying with him and figuring it out. The word bitterness stuck out to me. As if the writer and his friend ended their talk with an argument, it’s hard to understand someone struggling with depression, he probably left frustrated, and feeling helpless, which could add to his guilt. Since these words are the chorus, which is repeated multiple times throughout the song, I feel like this is significant. Losing a friend to suicide is hard, but to have a sense of responsibility for it makes the loss that much harder to bear.

There is a line in the song that leads me to believe the writer went into the conversation with good intentions, but was doing more talking than listening. ” Let him know that you know best, because after all you do know best.” Nobody knows what the suicidal person is dealing with, only the one who is struggling. Going into a conversation like that, being a know it all, is the opposite of what they need. The best thing that you can do for some with depression is to simply listen. The writer seems like he did genuinely want to help, and at the time he thought what he was doing was helping. In his music video the word listen is written on a board, but that word is nowhere in his lyrics. I assume that the writer did reflect back and realize that maybe he just needed to listen instead of give advice. He did a fantastic job connecting with his listeners. I can visualize sitting with a friend trying to talk them down from their suicidal thoughts, or picturing his conversation with his friend. This you feel the song even deeper, because you are connecting with the two people.

The main theme that reoccurs in this song is helplessness, and guilt. Helplessness, because he couldn’t keep his friend from committing suicide. As his friend he wishes he could have been able to help him, let him see his worth through his eyes. Guilt, because he didn’t try harder, or stay longer with him. He didn’t just listen, he tried to tell him how to fix it, instead of being open to what his friend was trying to say. Now he has to live his life without his friend, and the what if’s are haunting. The anatomy of Grey’s Anatomy

As a Nursing major,  I am a little embarrassed to admit how much I love the ABC hit series Grey’s Anatomy. The show has just completed it’s 12th season, and I have seen every single episode. For those of you who haven’t watched Grey’s, it’s an overly dramatized medical show. Filled with sex, confusing relationships, deaths, and the thing that I love most, race, and gender equality. The main character, Meredith Grey starts out doing her surgical internship at Seattle Grace Hospital, and over the seasons she becomes a surgical attending. The cast has had many members come and go, but it’s diversity in gender, and race have stayed constant. The cast predominately female, with their male cast members not any higher in the workplace. There are african american, latino, asian, and caucasian doctors, non of which being favored over the other. Grey’s also tosses in the topic of gay marriage, and interracial relationships. The equality of this show makes it great, but sadly isn’t a great comparison to how the real world workplace is today. So why would the shows creator take this stance?

According to recent studies, the majority of doctors are caucasian males. In Grey’s Anatomy the Chief of surgery starts of as a African American male with a substance abuse issue. When his drinking gets out of hand he no longer holds his position, and it’s passed down to an African American female. She does the job equally, if not better than the male surgeon, and it’s inspiring to see. The show does an amazing job breaking gender inequality. Since the show is so diverse, I believe it is a representation of America. Ideally we are all equal, America is a melting pot, and Grey’s portrays that. Equal opportunity for all races, genders, and sexual orientation. In the show there is an episode where a patient refused treatment from the African American, female chief of surgery, which can be the reality for minority doctors. There is also a lesbian couple who are both surgeons, and there is no change in their career when they both come out and admit to being in a relationship. Women are normally perceived as “soft”, but in this show the men have also had their share of tears, and angry moments. This show is breaking barriers that are still common, portraying an idealistic version of society. Grey’s dabbles anywhere from 10-19 million viewers per episode, so hopefully others catch on to the important topics in the show, not just focusing on the drama. I can say that as a viewer I have believed that as a female I could hold an important position, in a dominantly male field. If that was the creators goal, then it was achieved.

Aside from all of the tv show drama, I love what Grey’s Anatomy stands for. I only hope that as time passes our society can change it’s views. The creator did this for a reason, showing it’s viewers that this is possible. Equal opportunity is one of the main themes continued throughout all 12 seasons. Every character has had their struggles, and successes, but that being based off of their lives, no discrepancy of their race, gender, or sexual preference. Now if only we could match the real world with the equality seen in Grey’s Anatomy, it would be a better place to live.

I figured I would explain why I am here, and what the goal of my blog is. I am a current contemporary literature student, who is going to school for nursing. My goal is to learn to analyze, and be able to read into things that aren’t at surface level. This will be helpful in my everyday life as well as my career as a nurse. I will be making posts analyzing things that interest me. This could range anywhere from a show on netflix, music videos, or a book. I hope my readers will engage with my blog, and give me their point of view. It interests me to see how others brains pick apart things differently than I do. I look forward to analyzing , and debating with all of you. Until next time readers!

“7 years” by Lukas Graham

The first time I heard this song I was in my spin class doing resistance training, pedaling slow, but strong. I was trying to take my mind off of the pain, so I focused on the lyrics. The song starts off saying “once I was 7 years old my mama told me go make yourself some friends or you’ll be lonely” This is the only time his mama is mentioned in the entire song. I wonder if his mom passed away shortly after, and that’s the reason she is only mentioned once. His father is mentioned a few times throughout the song, which makes me believe that he played a bigger role in his life, physically or emotionally. At age 11 he thought he was invincible, smoking and drinking, his life didn’t seem to be heading in a positive direction, so his dad told him he needed to get a wife or he would end up lonely. Both of his parents gave him the same piece of advice, don’t end up alone. Maybe there is something to their advice? You would assume his parents are not divorced, because he doesn’t mention anything about them being separated, but my thought is they are either divorced, or his mother passed away, leaving his father to raise him.

After his spurt of partying he started to focus on his goals, and look towards the future. He says ” I always had that dream like my daddy before me, so I started writing songs, I started writing stories” We know that he ended up in the music industry, but we don’t know what his father did for a living. This verse suggests his dad was also a musician, and that they both had similar dreams they were chasing. That could possibly be the reason he talks about his dad more in the song, because he can relate to him. A dads dream is to have their son follow in their footsteps. He seems to be very self motivated, not by money or fame, but because he truly loves music. The line that speaks to me the most out of this part of the song is  “I only see my dreams, I don’t believe in failure, because I know the smallest voices they can make it major” This is how he got away from the party scene, and became a known musician, he is driven to succeed. Positive thinking leads to a positive life. When he was 20 he got discovered as a musician. At this time in his life he was putting everything he had into his songs, and it finally paid off. Hard work lead him to success, though he didn’t give much detail about how he made it in the music industry.

He talks about wanting to have kids, and how it’s important to have a good relationship with them. He projects about his wife giving him babies he can tell his story to. I don’t think he has kids at this time because he says “or will i have a lot of children who can warm me” so I assume that he doesn’t have kids yet. But he thinks about being a dad, and what it means to him. His dad may have been a great example to him, and he can’t wait to pass that on. I think it means a lot to him to have kids, and that’s his next big step in life, since he accomplished his goals as a musician.

Lukas stops predicting his life at the early age of 60. I believe he does this because his dad passed away at 61, so he doesn’t know what else to look for beyond those years. He could fantasize about life after 60, but he stops there. He may not believe there is much to live for after that, besides watching your children grow. Hopefully he doesn’t think 60 is the end, there is much more life to be lived. He ends the song restating the very first verse ” once i was 7 years old, my mama told me, go make yourself some friends or you’ll” be lonely, once I was 7 years old” I think he ends it this way to say that no matter what happens you need to have people around you, who support you in every stage of life. You can’t go through your life alone, thats the most important lesson of all.
